The NDRRMC has reported that a Whirlwind blew through Quezon on the evening of the 23rd causing at least 40 families to evacuate and take shelter from the strong winds. At this time no injuries have been reported from the tornado like storm yet at least two other deaths have occurred over the past several days due to the rough weather blowing in from the east associated with the strong and powerful typhoon Jelawat ( Lawin).
Tornadoes are not uncommon in tropical systems. Typically the form with rain bands move on shore over rough terrain, this causes vertical wind shear in the cloud structure and that in return sometimes can cause rotation in the cloud as seen in the video below from GMA NEWS.
This is just one instance of severe weather from this storm. Please check our newest updates for more information on Jelawat (Lawin) and other weather currently occurring in the western pacific.
